The legendary tabla maestro, Zakir Hussain left for his heavenly abode on December 15, 2024. Days after being laid to his forever resting place in San Fransisco, his Instagram handle lit up once again with a surprising post. This was the first time that the late Ustad’s family broke their silence since his passing.

On December 22, 2024, Zakir Hussain’s family took to his official Instagram account to share an emotional post with a black-and-white picture. The black-and-white photograph featured the intertwined hands of Zakir Hussain, his wife, Antonia Minnecola, and their daughters, Anisa and Isabella Qureshi. The caption accompanying the image read:

“Forever together in love (heart emoji)”

Needless to say, sharing the image from Zakir Hussain’s account has deeply resonated with fans worldwide. The post has since garnered over 28,900 likes and more than 1,300 comments, with the late maestro’s admirers and fellow musicians baring their hearts in the comment section.

In addition to numerous heart and prayer emojis, the late tabla player’s followers from around the world left heartfelt comments on the post. One user commented: “Rest in peace, master, your teachings will continue to inspire generations”, whereas another wrote: “You will always be remembered ustad ji, your contribution to Indian classical music is unmatched”.

Prominent names in the music industry, including his Shakti bandmate, Shankar Mahadevan, Karsh Kale, Ankur Tewari, Hariharan, and Pakistani artist, Ali Sethi, joined the chorus of love and admiration. Musician Salim Merchant wrote, “Everyone has a little bit of Ustad in them. You’ve inspired and will continue to inspire everyone.”

Zakir Hussain was laid to rest in San Fransisco, accompanied by a musical tribute by Sivamani

At 73, Zakir Hussain passed away on December 15, 2024, in San Francisco, following complications from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. On Thursday, December 19, the tabla maestro was laid to his forever resting place at the Fernwood Cemetery in San Fransisco. Hundreds of the tabla virtuoso’s admirers gathered to pay their respects. Adding a fitting homage to the late Tabla player, renowned percussionist, Sivamani and other musicians performed a drum tribute near the cemetery.

Zakir Hussain’s six-decade-long musical legacy

Ustad Zakir Hussain’s career as a tabla player spanned six remarkable decades, earning him four Grammy Awards, including three at the 66th Grammy Awards earlier this year. He was the son of tabla legend, Ustad Alla Rakha, and received some of the highest accolades of an Indian citizen, including the Padma Shri (1988), Padma Bhushan (2002), and Padma Vibhushan (2023).

After receiving his Grammy awards, the maestro penned a heartfelt gratitude message on his IG handle, which read:

“The 3 Grammys arrived right on Mother’s Day. Much thanks to the Academy, to my Shakti brothers and my As We Speak CD mates for carrying me through these many years to this landmark moment and of course the priceless joy of sharing “This Moment” with my family. Love you all.”
