The building that housed a restaurant collapsed in the Playa de Palma area, south of Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Mediterranean island.

A local police spokesperson told radio station RNE that the first emergency calls came around 8:00 p.m. (18:00 GMT).

“The terrace has collapsed, probably due to excess weight,” he said, adding that the cause of the disaster was still being investigated.

Public television in the Balearic Islands, IB3, where Mallorca is located, reported that there were people dancing on a terrace that collapsed onto the ground below.

A firefighter described a “nightmare” scene to the newspaper Última Hora and said that when he arrived, people were crying and screaming in the rubble of the ground floor.

The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims on Day X, saying that he was “closely monitoring the consequences.”

The central government was ready to send “all necessary resources” to help regional authorities deal with the situation, he added.

Sánchez said he had spoken with the president of the Balearic Islands and the mayor of the city.

The president of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, said on X that she was “shocked” by the news and added that she was sending “love and warmth to the families of the four people who lost their lives.”

Mallorca is known for its crystal-clear waters and beaches, and more than 14 million tourists visited the islands last year, according to official figures.

Thursday’s collapse occurred at the start of the peak tourist season, on a beachfront avenue that is home to several shops and entertainment venues.
