Decoding Yuvraj Singh’s illustrious career: The making of Indian cricket’s one of the most decorated players ever
There are countless iconic moments in Yuvraj Singh’s career, but some are a bit more special to him and his massive fanbase. Some of the biggest achievements of Yuvraj Singh’s career include being named as the player of the tournament in India’s 2011 World Cup triumph, hitting six sixes in an over in the 2007 T20 World Cup, and scoring the fastest T20 World Cup fifty against England in just 12 balls.
Yuvraj Singh is also the only player to feature in seven ICC finals, the first to win MOTM awards in three ICC knockout games, and the most ODI hundreds at the number five spot. Over the years, we have heard many commentators, analysts, and cricketers say that India would not have won the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ICC Cricket World. However, all this glory, success, and superstardom didn’t come easy to Yuvraj, as he underwent extensive training under his father, Yograj Singh. So today, we will look at Yuvraj Singh and Yograj Singh’s troubled relationship.
Yograj Singh divorced Yuvraj Singh’s mother, Shabnam Kaur to marry Neena Budhel, who is a Punjabi actress
Not everyone is aware of the fact that former Indian cricketer, Yograj Singh had two marriages in his life. While his first marriage was with Shabnam Kaur, with whom he welcomed Yuvraj and Zoravar Singh, later in life, he fell in love with Neena Bundhel, and they welcomed three kids, Victor Singh and Amarjot Kaur. According to several media reports, Yograj divorced Shabnam after facing a series of marriage conflicts.
At that time, Yuvraj Singh was quite young, and it was difficult for him to see his father divorcing his mother. Although Yograj Singh always prioritised Yuvraj’s training until he became a professional cricketer, but if the murmurs are to be believed, the divorce was indeed a traumatic phase for a young Yuvraj. The cricketer has never discussed his father’s divorce and shares a healthy relationship with his half-siblings, Victor Singh and Amarjot Kaur.
When Yuvraj Singh revealed his father, Yograj Singh threw his National Championship Gold Medal and skates to redirect his entire focus on cricket
Yuvraj Singh shared a shocking revelation about his life in a conversation with Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan on the Club Prairie Fire Podcast. The iconic cricketer shared that he never wanted to play cricket in the first place; instead, he was interested in making his career in skating. Yuvraj was passionate about skating and proved the mettle of his potential after winning a Gold medal in the National Championship.
It was a major moment in Yuvraj Singh’s life as he had won a Gold medal in skating, which he loved so much, but it was exactly when his father, Yograj Singh, put a full stop to his skating career. Recalling the same, Yuvraj revealed that after winning the medal when he was on his way home with his father, the latter threw his gold medal and skates out of the moving car. Sharing what his father told him, Yuvraj recalled:
“I did not want to play in the heat. My father was hell-bent; I played cricket because he did not play cricket for long, and he wanted to live his dream through me. I won a gold medal; the gold medal went out of the car with my skates. He was like, ‘No more roller skating from now.'”
Further, in the same interview, Yuvraj Singh credited his father, Yograj Singh, for his selection into the Indian cricket team at 18. The cricketer admitted that he had good hand-eye coordination, which his father observed and immediately started pushing him towards cricket. Before playing for the Indian team, Yograj Singh excruciated on Yuvraj for eight long years, which eventually became the reason why he got into the Indian team. Sharing the same, he said:
“I used to hate playing cricket in the heat. It’s okay to play on the streets, but playing six hours a day was not nice. But I guess I had good hand-eye coordination, and he kind of saw that. For the next eight years, he was excruciating on me. That’s the reason why I played for India when I was 18 and a half. He kind of prepared me for those situations.”
When Yograj Singh threatened Yuvraj Singh to break his legs if he didn’t play cricket
In another interview, Yuvraj Singh revealed that his father, Yograj Singh, even threatened to break his legs if he didn’t play cricket. He said, “He (Yograj Singh) told me: ‘From now on, you play cricket, not this girls’ sport. If you don’t play cricket, I will break your legs.'” Not only Yuvraj Singh but in many of his father, Yograj Singh’s interviews, the latter could be seen admitting that he had trained his son with a little madness. From playing with injuries, training in cold winters, and pushing his son to the extreme limits, Yograj did everything, and all the sacrifices paid off when Yuvraj became a world-class batsman.
Yuvraj Singh shared his father, Yograj Singh, has some mental health issues
During his conversation with Ranveer Allahbadia on his YouTube podcast, Yuvraj Singh shared that he doesn’t want his son, Orion Keech Singh, to become a cricketer. Revealing the reason behind it, Yuvraj said he has seen kids of many cricketers under much pressure. He added that he had told his father not to train Orion early and let the kid enjoy his childhood. In the same podcast, Yuvraj also shared that, in his opinion, his father has some mental health issues, but he never accepts it. He said:
“I think my father has mental issues and he just doesn’t want to accept it. I feel that there is something he needs to address. He doesn’t accept it.”
We have repeatedly seen Yuvraj Singh thank his father, Yograj Singh, for everything he has done for him, but also clearly stated that he has ‘daddy issues’ in his life. Sharing how he doesn’t want to treat his son, Orion, like the way his father, Yograj, treated him, speaks almost everything about Yuvraj and Yograj’s bond. Although it made Yuvraj one of India’s greatest cricketers ever, but the way Yograj Singh trained him was a bit stressful for Yuvraj and heavily impacted his mental health.
