How many inches of snow will Texas get? Dallas-Fort Worth area under winter storm watch

A second winter storm is brewing over Texas and poses a much bigger threat to parts of the state than Winter Storm Blair.

This system will have a more southern impact later this week before turning towards the Northeast. In the coming days, cities such as Dallas, Nashville, and Atlanta may experience snow and ice.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for parts of North Texas beginning Wednesday night and ending around noon Friday. On Thursday, the Dallas-Fort Worth area can expect snowfall of 2 to 5 inches. Areas along and north of Interstate 20 might see snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches.

Untreated roads are likely to be slick, especially those with light icing, the weather service warns. Residents are urged to reconsider travel later in the week and to keep monitoring the forecast.

Severe weather conditions are likely to prompt school delays and congested morning traffic in the Dallas-Fort Worth area Thursday. Flight delays and cancellations are also anticipated.

Regardless of snow totals, extremely low temperatures will produce ice in northeastern parts of the state Wednesday night and Thursday.

AccuWeather predicts the same snow totals for Dallas, with precipitation beginning around 8 a.m. Thursday and ending 10 a.m. Friday. Some areas might also see a “substantial amount of ice.”

This week’s snowstorm “could deliver more than a year’s worth of snow to Dallas,” AccuWeather reports. The city’s historical average annual snowfall is 1.6 inches, including sleet. The forecaster also warns of potential for 6 to 12 inches of snow, which would make it the biggest snowstorm the metroplex has experienced since 12.5 inches of snow blanketed it in February 2010.
