Kevin Costner reveals the huge amount of personal money he invested in the film ‘Horizon’

Kevin Costner is getting candid about the cost of his latest big screen project. The actor and filmmaker opens up to GQ about the realization of Horizon: An American Sagaincluding his decision to self-finance the film along with two anonymous outside investors.

“I know they say I have $20 million of my own money on this movie,” Costner told the magazine for his summer number, addressing media reports on the topic. “It’s not true. Now I have about $38 million on the movie. That’s the truth. That’s the real number.”

On Sunday, the veteran actor, 69, was accompanied by five of his seven children on the red carpet at the premiere of his film in it cannes film festival. Inside the theater, Costner was thrilled to receive a 7-minute standing ovation for the Western drama that has been years in the making.

“I felt like time was passing,” he said of the project.

“I thought the window was closing for me to be able to play an effective role in that movie,” he added. “And then I basically burned my boats.”

Doubling down, Costner continued: “Just like Cortes, we’re fucking here. I’m going to do this. And I mortgaged property. Get it?”

Costner also admitted that he needed a job after the pandemic.

“I was working and I really realized at a couple of points that I needed to work a little harder, for various reasons. Just instinct of what I would need to do as a quote-unquote provider. I needed to establish a couple of things,” he said.

Instead of finding ways to invest in property or businesses, Costner explained that he hoped to set an example of passion for his children.

“That’s the message I want my kids to understand about who I am: that I do what I believe,” he said.

Costner has had a difficult year included a divorce from his ex-wifeChristine Baumgartner, after 18 years of marriage, and her departure of the hit Paramount drama yellow stone.

“I’ve taken big bites out of life, life has taken big bites out of me, right? I’m not going to lose myself because I’ve been hurt,” he said. “I have been, but I’m not going to get lost. And what I’m going to do is… because now we’re behind the white whale, okay? So I can’t let go of this rope, no matter how hard my heart is. on the ground, no matter how broken I am daily, I can’t let go of this rope because if I do, this thing called Horizon it will stop. AND HorizonIt’s not more important than the other things in my life, but I have a level of responsibility to those guys who invested in me, to the people who believe in me, to the people who want to work on all four things, and I’m willing to put it off. other jobs at the suggestion that he might work. And that’s why no matter how much water hits me in the face, I can’t let go of the rope that is this thing.”

Horizon: An American Saga is set in the period before and after the American Civil War and represents the expansion of the American West. In total, Costner’s ambitious project will consist of four films. The official description of the film says Horizon “explores the appeal of the Old West and how it was won (and lost) through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey through a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and enemies, all trying to discover what it really means to be the United States of America.”

Chapter One will hit theaters on June 28, followed by Chapter Two on August 16.

Last month, Costner spoke to ET and revealed his son Hayes’ special connection to the project and how it inspired him to get to work on it.

“I named him after the character I play in this. My character’s name is Hayes Ellison,” Costner told ET. “And I gave Hayes that character. So I was watching him grow up and I thought, ‘Man, I better get on with it and make this movie.'”

The Oscar-winning actor revealed that his son did not have to audition for the role. While it’s an unconventional take on the star, Costner gushed about Hayes’ work and dedication to the film.

“I captured him and brought him in, and he’s very good at this little part that he’s done,” Costner praised. “If you see it, I think it has an impact on the movie.”
