Man gets life term after 3-month Pocso trial

A Pocso court in UP’s Mainpuri sentenced a 37-year-old man to life imprisonment on Tuesday for raping a 5-year-old girl following a three-month trial .
In a police complaint, the girl’s father said the incident occurred on July 23 when he and his wife were working in their agricultural field. He alleged that when they returned home, they found the accused standing in the courtyard, while their daughter was inside, covered in blood. The father said he tried to catch the accused, who is a resident of the same village, but he ran away.
Police filed a case against the accused under BNS sections 65-2 (commits rape on a woman under twelve years) and 351-2 (criminal intimidation) and provisions of Pocso Act, and arrested him. The accused was subsequently sent to jail, and the chargesheet was submitted in the Pocso court. Assistant district govt counsel (ADGC) Anup Yadav told TOI, “Based on testimonies and evidence presented by the prosecution, the court convicted the man of rape and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him which will go towards rehabilitation of the survivor.”
