Netflix releases first look at new Witcher after Henry Cavill leaves for Warhammer 40K

It’s been a tumultuous run for Netflix’s popular adaptation of The Witcher novels and games. A series of setbacks and controversies caused a long delay after the show lost its star, Henry Cavill. Now, a brief preview of the fourth season gives us our first look at Cavill’s replacement in the role of Geralt of Rivia, Liam Hemsworth.

The video above reveals little about the direction of the season beyond establishing that yes, Hemsworth is now Geralt, and this is what it looks like. He looks the part, although it’s hard for some fans to imagine him matching Cavill’s perfect presence and delivery for the character.

Look, Cavill is famous for being a passionate gamer. He has spoken at length about his deep fandom for Warhammer 40Ktheir experiences playing world of warcraftand yes, his experiences with the immensely popular 2015 open-world role-playing game. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. He even appeared in a video building a gaming PC.

Rumors abounded when the former Superman actor announced he would be leaving the Netflix show after the third season, including some rumors that he had left creative differences with the showrunners over staying true to the spirit of the source material. We may never know the full story, but it looks like Cavill is on his way to bigger and better things: He’s attached as producer and star of a major Marvel Cinematic Universe-wide effort by Amazon Studios to thicken the story. Warhammer 40K into a big-budget live-action phenomenon.

Liam Hemsworth’s addition to the role was announced alongside Cavill’s departure. Here’s an excerpt from Cavill’s statement at the time:

As with the greatest literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent playing Geralt and with excitement to see Liam’s portrayal of the most fascinating and nuanced man. Liam, good sir, this character has wonderful depth. He enjoys taking you in and seeing what you can find.

It was previously announced that the final season of the series will be the fifth, meaning Hemsworth will play the character for two seasons. However, the events of season three suggested that the show will, going forward, focus as much on Freya Allen’s Ciri.

The fourth season is currently in production and is expected to premiere on the streaming service in 2025.
