Donald Trump’s presidential campaign has received a $50m (£39.5m) boost from conservative billionaire Timothy Mellon, a federal document showed on Thursday.
The Super-Pac fund called “MAGA Inc” revealed to the Federal Election Commission that it received more than $68 million from donors last month.
Reuters reported that Mellon, an heir to the Pittsburgh-based Mellon banking family, donated $50 million. Another $10 million came from billionaires Liz and Dick Uihlein.
US media reported that Mellon sent the donation the day after Trump was convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business records in his hush money trial in New York.
Mellon has also been the largest donor to independent presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr, donating to the pro-Kennedy American Values Super-Pac at least $20 million.
Super-Pacs are independent “political action committees” that can raise unlimited amounts of money to support an electoral candidate.
Mellon’s donation has helped pro-Trump allies outspend US President Joe Biden’s allies on campaigns in recent weeks.
Mellon, who lives in Wyoming and is rarely photographed, is an amateur pilot who has invested in and run transportation-related companies.
Forbes estimates that the Mellon family is worth around $14.1 billion.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that billionaire Mike Bloomberg has donated nearly $20 million to Super-Pacs supporting Biden.
Bloomberg’s contribution included $19 million to an independent pro-Biden group known as Future Forward or FF PAC.
Another $900,000 was donated to the Biden Victory Fund, which is a merger of the Biden and Democratic Party campaign committees.
Biden’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
On Thursday, the pro-Kennedy Super-Pac reported that it only received about $280,000 last month, and that none of that came from Mr. Mellon.
