People share stories about their in-laws

“Wow, my in-laws were very ‘protective’ at first. When my husband and I met, he had only been single for a month, was depressed, and it was his first real relationship. I gave him time to get his act together and be friends (even though I knew from the moment we met that he was going to be my husband) before I expressed how I felt to him. Well, let me tell you, I met his father and stepmother the first week we officially became a couple. I was feeling very confident about everything. Well, what my husband (then boyfriend) told me when we were on our way to his town was that his stepmother had been very close to his previous girlfriend. We spent about five days at their house, and the whole time, they were distant. It was hard to strike up a conversation, and it was very awkward.”

“Every time we started visiting them, I would have extreme anxiety, and he would tell me that everything would be okay in time. Well, after six months of dating, we knew we wanted to get married. He told his parents, and they yelled at him.

He was told that you have to know someone for two years before you know if you love them. My husband didn’t understand and said it was going to happen anyway (one of the hottest things he’s ever done for me). A week later, his stepmom sent him the nastiest text messages about me in detailed paragraphs about how I was going to ruin his entire life and that I was the biggest mistake he would ever make. Turns out she was drunk when she sent them. To top it off, the day we got engaged, she told him, “Get ready to ruin the rest of your life.”

Since we got married, we have overcome adversity and his comments, and now his father loves me. We recently went on a family vacation and that made things a little better between his stepmother and I. Now, his brother has found his soul mate, and they are very loving and kind to her. Through assimilation and conversations with my husband, I think they learned that they cannot control their children once they become adults. My husband and I are madly in love and growing stronger every day.”
