SPFL: Dramatic Scottish Premiership season draws more viewers to Sky Sports | football news

The exciting Old Firm title race in a dramatic season in the Scottish Premiership saw a huge rise in the number of viewers watching games live on Sky Sports.

Almost 2.5 million additional viewers tuned in over the course of the season, a 24 per cent increase on the previous campaign’s peak audience, as Celtic claimed a third consecutive league title with a game to spare. .

12.5 million watched SPFL matches on Sky and each match attracted an average of 285,000 viewers.

April’s thrilling Old Firm clash at Ibrox set a new SPFL record with more than 1.4 million tuning into Sky Sports for the enthralling 3-3 draw between Rangers and Celtic.

The figures for the dramatic clash were the highest for a Scottish league match since the SPFL was formed in 2013.

Neil Doncaster, SPFL group chief executive, said: “It is great news to see such strong growth in viewing figures for SPFL matches on Sky Sports this season.

“These fantastic viewing figures further demonstrate how attractive our domestic game is to fans, as well as the huge interest in our game in Scotland and the UK.

“Sky Sports has been an excellent broadcast partner to the SPFL for many seasons and we look forward to continuing to build on our excellent working relationship in the 2024/25 season.”

Gary Hughes, director of football at Sky Sports, added: “The figures underline our continued commitment to helping grow the game alongside our partners in the SPFL. Seeing a significant increase in viewership throughout the season alongside a Record audience for a game in the SPFL era shows that we are taking very positive steps.

“The team, including new signing Chris Sutton, have taken our coverage to a different level and we are already looking forward to building on the success of this season in 2024/25.”
