Stuttgart Open: Jack Draper reaches the quarterfinals with a hard-fought victory over Marcos Girón | tennis news

Jack Draper continued his preparations for Wimbledon with a battle victory over American Marcos Girón to book his place in the quarter-finals of the Stuttgart Open.

Draper, who threatens Cameron Norrie’s British men’s number one spot, missed the entire grass season last year due to injury.

After a straight sets victory over Sebastian Ofner on Monday, Draper found things tougher this time against Girón, who had comfortably beaten another Briton, Andy Murray, in his first round match.

The first set was on serve until Draper broke serve in the fifth game, and the 22-year-old took the win 6-4 in just 31 minutes.

Girón regrouped in the second set. After a key hold in the fifth game, saving five break points, the American broke Draper to advance 5-3 on his way to leveling the match.

However, Draper took a 3-0 lead in the deciding set and although Girón continued to fight, Draper would eventually claim a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory.

“I thought I played a really good first set and then he came back really strong,” Draper said after his win.

“I had a little concentration problem, but then I came out very strong in the third set and I was very happy with the way I was able to overcome the match.

“Yesterday he beat Andy Murray, who is obviously an incredible player and I knew he had a very high level.

“I had to go out there and know that he was going to bring that, but I was able to stay with him and get through it. I’m really happy with the way I performed mentally today.”
