Bournemouth Win First European Match, Beat Real Sociedad 2-0 in Europa League

Bournemouth marked their first-ever European fixture with a 2-0 victory at Real Sociedad in the Europa League on Thursday, with goals from Justin Kluivert and Rayan securing a historic win in San Sebastian.

Kluivert opened the scoring in the 11th minute after a VAR review overturned an initial offside call, converting Adrien Truffert’s cross from close range. Rayan doubled the lead nine minutes later, heading home a lofted pass from Alex Scott.

Manager Marco Rose said before the match that he could ‘feel how special this moment is’ for the supporters. ‘This is a huge achievement and everyone deserved it,’ Rose said. ‘We’re going to have 2,000 fans here tomorrow so it shows how big the club is and how the club grew the past couple of years.’

Rose also acknowledged the challenge posed by Real Sociedad. ‘A strong team, high individual quality, a high intense team,’ he said. ‘It’s going to be a tough challenge for us.’

Bournemouth lined up with Kluivert, Rayan, and Marcus Tavernier supporting striker Evanilson. The visitors took control early and were rewarded when Kluivert’s goal was confirmed after a VAR check.

Rayan’s header came from a well-worked move, with Scott’s pass picking out the Brazilian’s run. Real Sociedad struggled to respond, managing only a few efforts from distance. Yangel Herrera and Ander Barrenetxea both shot over from outside the box in the first half.
