Dan Aykroyd Shares Ghostbusters II Motorcycle Story in Belated Birthday Tribute to Bill Murray

Dan Aykroyd marked Bill Murray’s 76th birthday with a social media post on Sept. 25, 2026, recalling an unauthorized late-night police motorcycle ride the two actors took through Central Park during the production of Ghostbusters II.

Aykroyd referred to Murray as the Murricane in the post and praised his contributions to comedy. ‘The greatest comedy leading man of our time. So many adventures over the years,’ Aykroyd said.

In the post, Aykroyd described how the two borrowed vehicles from the film’s motor pool during late-night shooting in New York City. ‘One night shooting GB2, we appropriated two fully equipped police motorcycles from the movie’s motor pool and spent an hour chasing each other around a closed Central Park with full lights and sirens. No consequences. After all, we were Ghostbusters,’ Aykroyd said.

Health Update and Book Delay

The birthday tribute follows a recent personal update from Aykroyd. He revealed in a Sept. 12 Instagram post that he had undergone emergency foot surgery two weeks earlier to clean out an infection.

Aykroyd postponed the fall promotional tour for his debut novel, Soulhider, due to his recovery. The book was originally scheduled for release on Oct. 27, 2026, but is now set for May 18, 2027. ‘We were supposed to release the book this October/November but two weeks ago I underwent emergency foot surgery to clean out an infection,’ Aykroyd wrote. ‘So we have postponed the release until May 18 when I expect to be fully recovered.’

Ghostbusters Franchise Future

Aykroyd has stated in recent interviews that he does not expect either himself or Murray to return to their iconic roles in the Ghostbusters film franchise. ‘I don’t see where they would need us to carry it on. They’ve got a whole new cast, and they’ve got whole new ideas,’ Aykroyd told the New York Post.

The original 1984 Ghostbusters starred Aykroyd, Murray, the late Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson as Manhattan-based paranormal investigators. The film spawned several sequels and reboots. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, released in 2024, reunited the original cast with a new generation of characters.

Aykroyd remains involved with the franchise through a new animated Ghostbusters series from Sony Pictures Animation, set for release on Netflix in 2027. He serves as an executive producer on the project.

Bill Murray’s Recent Projects

Murray has remained active in film and television. He is set to star opposite Kristen Wiig in the comedy Epiphany, directed by Max Barbakow. He is also attached to Diamond, The Ploughmen, and The Springs.

Murray recently appeared at the Presidents Cup golf tournament on Sept. 24, 2026, carrying the trophy during the opening ceremony at Medinah Country Club in Illinois.

His new six-part BBC travel series, A Course Called Ireland, will premiere on BBC One Northern Ireland and BBC iPlayer on Oct. 23, 2026, and on BBC Two on Oct. 25 at 9:30 p.m. The series follows Murray as he explores golf courses across Ireland and Northern Ireland alongside celebrity friends including Chris O’Dowd, Jason Kelce, and Joanne McNally.

As of Sept. 25, 2026, Aykroyd continues to recover from foot surgery. His birthday tribute to Murray remains the most recent public statement between the two longtime collaborators.
