Marvel Comics Introduces a New Fist of Khonshu as Moon Knight Arc Shifts Before Avengers Doomsday

Marvel Comics is launching a new Moon Knight series that will see a different character take on the mantle of the Fist of Khonshu. The publisher confirmed the change on Tuesday, just as the Marvel Cinematic Universe prepares to bring Marc Spector back to the big screen in Avengers: Doomsday.

The new comic book run will be written by Jed MacKay, who has guided Moon Knight through his most critically praised era in recent years. Artist Alessandro Cappuccio will return for interior art, continuing the creative team that defined the 2021 Moon Knight series and its follow-up, Vengeance of the Moon Knight.

The change comes after the events of Vengeance of the Moon Knight, which concluded with Marc Spector sacrificing himself to save the world. In that story, Spector died fighting the Black Spectre and other enemies, leaving the role of Moon Knight vacant.

Marvel has now confirmed that a new character will step into the white costume. The new Moon Knight will not be Marc Spector, but rather an existing figure from the supporting cast who has been built up across MacKay’s run.

According to Marvel’s official announcement, the new Moon Knight will be revealed in the first issue. The publisher has not yet named the successor, but has stated that the series will explore what happens when someone else inherits the burden and power of Khonshu.

MacKay said the series will examine the difference between Marc Spector and his replacement. The writer noted that Marc was uniquely suited to survive Khonshu’s demands because of his dissociative identity disorder and his long history of violence and trauma.

‘Marc Spector was Khonshu’s fist because he was already broken,’ MacKay said. ‘What happens when someone who is not broken picks up the mantle?’

The new Moon Knight series is scheduled to debut in 2026. Marvel has not yet announced a specific release date, but the timing places it several months before Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on May 1, 2026.

Oscar Isaac portrayed Marc Spector in the 2022 Disney+ series Moon Knight. The show introduced the character to the MCU and ended with a tease that Khonshu still had plans for Spector and his alternate identity, Steven Grant.

Isaac is confirmed to return as Moon Knight in Avengers: Doomsday. The film, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, began production in 2025 and is expected to bring together dozens of Marvel characters from across the multiverse.

The comic book relaunch is part of a broader Marvel initiative to sync its publishing line with the movie slate. Similar moves have brought new series for characters appearing in upcoming films, including the Fantastic Four and the X-Men.

MacKay has been one of Marvel’s most prominent writers since taking over Moon Knight in 2021. His run won an Eisner Award and expanded the character’s world by introducing new allies and enemies, including Hunter’s Moon and the vampire structure known as the Structure.

Cappuccio’s art on the series has been widely praised for its shadow-heavy style and kinetic action sequences. He has drawn nearly every issue of MacKay’s Moon Knight saga, including the crossover event Blood Hunt.

The new series will continue the story threads left dangling after Marc Spector’s death. Those threads include the fate of the Midnight Mission, the community center Spector ran as a safe haven, and the loyalty of his allies, including Tigra and Hunter’s Moon.

Tigra has been a central figure in MacKay’s run. She became Spector’s partner and romantic interest, and she played a major role in Vengeance of the Moon Knight. Many readers have speculated that Tigra could be the new Moon Knight, though Marvel has not confirmed any candidate.

Hunter’s Moon, whose real name is Dr. Badr, is another possible successor. He serves the same god and has acted as a rival and ally to Spector. His own connection to Khonshu is deep, and he has worn a similar white costume.

Marvel editor Tom Brevoort said the new series will respect what came before while pushing the mythos forward. Brevoort stated that the creative team has earned the right to define the next chapter of Moon Knight.

‘Jed and Alessandro have built something special,’ Brevoort said. ‘This is not a reset. This is the next logical step in the story they have been telling.’

The announcement has generated discussion among fans, particularly because Moon Knight has been synonymous with Marc Spector since his debut in 1975. Spector first appeared in Werewolf by Night #32, created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin.

However, the Moon Knight identity has changed hands before. In the 1980s, supporting character Midnight briefly wore the costume. In later stories, Marc Spector’s brother Randall became the villain Shadow Knight.

The current replacement is different because it appears to be permanent, at least for the foreseeable future. Marvel has not announced any plans for Marc Spector to return in the comics, although death is rarely permanent in superhero fiction.

The new series will launch as part of Marvel’s Fresh Start branding. It will be a new number one issue, a common strategy for publishers seeking to attract new readers.

Marvel has also released a teaser image showing the new Moon Knight in silhouette. The figure wears the classic white hood and cape, but the face is obscured, leaving the character’s identity a mystery.

Avengers: Doomsday is expected to feature Moon Knight in a supporting role. The film’s plot remains secret, but it will pit the Avengers against Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., who returns to the MCU in a new role.

The comic book relaunch and the film appearance are not directly connected in terms of story. Marvel Comics and Marvel Studios operate separately, though the two divisions often coordinate marketing around major characters.

Fans can expect more details about the new Moon Knight series in the coming weeks. Marvel typically reveals creative teams, covers, and story details through its official channels and at comic book conventions.

The first issue of the new Moon Knight series is available for preorder through comic book shops. It will be published in print and digital formats, with variant covers from multiple artists.

Marc Spector’s legacy in the comics remains intact. His death was portrayed as a heroic sacrifice, and his memory will likely play a major role in the new series as the successor grapples with his shadow.
