Wagner Moura has addressed the possibility of a sequel to The Last House after the Netflix sci-fi thriller became one of the streaming platform’s most-watched films of the year. In an interview with ScreenRant, Moura said he is unsure whether a second film will be made but is hopeful and willing to reprise his role as Jason Delgado if the opportunity arises.

The film, directed by Louis Leterrier, was released on Netflix on August 7, 2026. It debuted at No. 1 on the English-language film chart with 27.5 million views in its first three days, according to Netflix’s Tudum. The movie has since accumulated more than 72 million views across its first three weeks.

Moura Discusses the Film’s Ending

Moura also shared his interpretation of the film’s divisive ending, in which his character chooses to spare the life of a mysterious creature that has kept the family trapped inside their home for years. The creature then allows the family to leave.

Speaking to ScreenRant, Moura said Jason made the right choice. He explained that the decision was influenced by Jason’s relationship with his daughter Ruth, who repeatedly warned him about the creatures and was ignored throughout the film.

Moura said, ‘His daughter is always telling him something, and he doesn’t listen to her. The entire film, she’s saying something, and he responds just with this sort of arrogance that adults have towards their children. And I was like, Man, we really have to listen to everybody, but especially to our kids.’

He added, ‘What she said since the beginning was right. She was right. And the decision, therefore, I think the decision was, of course, first of all, he’s not killing anyone. And secondly, he listened to her.’

In a separate interview with CinemaBlend, Moura said he hopes the characters discover that the world changed for the better after their ordeal. He compared the film’s themes to his own hopes following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moura said, ‘I think that we came out of COVID when, when COVID sort of happened in the end of the whole pandemic, I was like, Okay, the world is gonna change. We are gonna come out of this with a different mindset. And I don’t think we did. So I hope it’s different for the characters of the film.’

Cast and Production

The Last House stars Greta Lee as Ann Delgado and Wagner Moura as Jason Delgado. Riley Chung, Emma Ho, and Arden Cho portray the couple’s daughter Ruth at different stages of her life. Noah Alexander Sosnowski and Gabriel Barbosa play their son Graham.

Louis Leterrier directed the film from a screenplay by Matthew Robinson. The producers are Louis Leterrier, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and Kori Adelson. The film has a runtime of 110 minutes.

The story follows a family of four who become mysteriously sealed inside their home during a heavy rainstorm. Doors and windows cannot be opened, phone and internet connections fail, and the family is cut off from the outside world. As weeks turn into months, they must ration food, adapt to their confinement, and confront the strange creatures that appear during the rain.

Critical Reception

The film has received largely negative reviews from critics. As of September 2026, it holds a 27 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, with an audience score of 28 percent.

The Times of India gave the film a 3 out of 5 rating, calling it a ‘grim, uneven apocalyptic sci-fi, survival thriller.’ The review noted that the first hour focuses on the family’s survival without much narrative development, and that the screenplay ‘loses focus mid-way about where it really wants to go.’

The Indian Express praised the performances of Greta Lee and Wagner Moura, writing that ‘their performances ground the film as the couple fall into familiar survival roles.’ The review added that the film is ‘an engaging survival thriller and one that can be watched with the family from the comforts of home.’

Streaming Performance

Despite the negative critical reception, The Last House has performed strongly on Netflix. It debuted at No. 1 on the English film list with 27.5 million views during the week of August 3-9, 2026. In its first week, it accumulated 51.4 million hours watched.

By the end of August, the film had reached 72 million views. It remained the most-watched movie globally on Netflix for multiple weeks. According to Nielsen data reported by Collider, the film surpassed 850 million minutes viewed in mid-August, bringing its total to over 1.6 billion minutes watched.

A sequel has not been officially announced by Netflix. The Last House is currently available to stream on Netflix.
