Former Disney child star Erik von Detten is facing a lawsuit alleging elder abuse and fraud over his role in selling gold coins to an elderly California couple. The case, filed in May but first reported on October 20, 2026, names von Detten and his former employer, Rosland Capital, as defendants.

What the lawsuit alleges

Sheila Greenberg, 85, and Norman Greenberg, 97, claim they were persuaded to invest more than $2.1 million in gold coins that were actually worth only about $1.3 million. The couple says von Detten, 44, leveraged their fears about financial stability to sell them precious metals at inflated prices.

The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, accuses von Detten and Rosland of violating California’s Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Civil Protection Act. It also includes claims of fraud, constructive fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and conversion. The Greenbergs are seeking $900,000 in damages, plus punitive damages, and have requested a jury trial.

According to the complaint, the couple contacted Rosland in 2020 after seeing television commercials. They were connected with von Detten, who they say assured them he was knowledgeable about precious metals and would make specific recommendations to protect their assets. The Greenbergs allege they placed multiple orders for gold coins, including Lady Liberty coins, but the coins were sent to a depository rather than delivered to them. The couple claims they later discovered the coins had been marked up significantly.

Rosland Capital’s bankruptcy and counterclaim

Rosland Capital filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 2026, just months after the Greenbergs filed their lawsuit. In response to the litigation, the company has also filed a counterclaim. The exact details of that counterclaim have not been publicly disclosed, but the bankruptcy filing suggests the company is restructuring its debts.

Court records show that a case management conference is scheduled for November 9, 2026, in Santa Monica. As of October 21, 2026, von Detten has not publicly commented on the allegations. Representatives for the actor and the Greenbergs’ attorney have not responded to requests for comment from multiple media outlets.

Background on von Detten

Erik von Detten is best known for playing Josh Bryant in 2001’s The Princess Diaries and for voicing Sid in the Toy Story franchise. He largely stepped away from acting after 2010, though he appeared in the 2024 Lifetime movie My Acting Coach Nightmare. Court documents state that he began working for Rosland Capital in 2018 as a senior account representative and broker.

The lawsuit has drawn attention not only because of von Detten’s former Hollywood profile but also because it highlights allegations of predatory practices targeting older investors. The case remains pending, with the next court date set for November.
