Clemson-North Carolina Football Game Suspended in Fourth Quarter Due to Lightning

Clemson’s ACC opener against North Carolina at Memorial Stadium was halted with 8:11 remaining in the fourth quarter on Saturday, September 19, 2026, because of lightning within eight miles of the stadium.

The Tar Heels led 17-15 and had the ball at Clemson’s 7-yard line with a second-and-goal when officials stopped play. The delay was announced just after 3 p.m. ET.

Clemson announced the stoppage on X, stating: ‘Severe weather and lightning have been detected within 8 miles of Memorial Stadium. Fans in the stadium should exit the seating area and move to a safer location, such as the concourse or your vehicle.’

The university added that fans outside the stadium could shelter at Fike Recreation Center and Littlejohn Coliseum.

Third Straight Weather Delay for Clemson

Saturday’s interruption marked the third consecutive game this season in which Clemson has faced a weather delay. The Tigers’ season opener at LSU on September 5 was delayed roughly two hours because of pregame lightning before kicking off at 9:41 p.m. Eastern.

One week later, Clemson’s home opener against Georgia Southern was also pushed back nearly two hours after lightning was detected within eight miles of Memorial Stadium. Clemson’s official game notes listed that delay at one hour and 56 minutes.

Under NCAA lightning safety rules, play cannot resume until at least 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder or visible lightning strike. Each additional strike or sound of thunder restarts that clock, making an exact resumption time difficult to project.

Game Situation at the Stoppage

North Carolina jumped out to a 14-3 first-quarter lead and carried a 17-6 advantage into halftime. The Tar Heels scored on touchdown runs by Demon June and Benjamin Hall in the opening quarter.

Clemson rallied in the third quarter. Freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds, making his first career start, connected with Christian Bentancur on a 27-yard touchdown pass that cut the deficit to 17-15. The Tigers failed on the subsequent two-point conversion attempt.

A 22-yard Nolan Hauser field goal earlier in the third quarter had brought Clemson within one score before the touchdown.

At the time of the delay, Reynolds had completed 19 of 29 passes for 202 yards with one touchdown and one interception. North Carolina running back Benjamin Hall had rushed for 126 yards on 16 carries.

Clemson had most of the momentum before the stoppage. A sack by senior Will Heldt on North Carolina quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. had energized the home crowd, and the Tigers had scored nine unanswered points in the second half to erase a double-digit deficit.

Weather Forecast and Context

The National Weather Service had forecast showers and thunderstorms for Clemson on Saturday afternoon, with storms becoming increasingly possible later in the day. FOX Carolina declared Saturday a First Alert Weather Day and reported before the game that storms were expected to develop between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. across the Upstate.

AccuWeather had projected humid, 86-degree temperatures with a RealFeel of 95 degrees for the noon kickoff, making it Clemson’s hottest game of the season to that point.

The game was the ACC opener for both teams. North Carolina entered at 2-0 under second-year coach Bill Belichick, while Clemson was 1-1 under Dabo Swinney after a season-opening loss to LSU and a win over Georgia Southern.

Clemson led the all-time series 41-19-1 and had won the last seven meetings, including a 38-10 victory at North Carolina in 2025.

There was no immediate word on a restart time at the time of the stoppage.
