Frankie Muniz Says He Has Hit ‘Rock Bottom’ Amid Personal Struggles

Frankie Muniz says he has reached a personal low point. In an Instagram post published on Friday, September 18, the actor and race car driver told followers that the past six weeks have been a ‘nightmare I’m praying to wake up from.’

Muniz, 40, wrote that ‘everything felt heavy, unclear, and like it was falling apart at the same time. I wouldn’t wish this season on anyone.’

The post represents the first extended public statement from Muniz about his emotional state since he announced the end of his marriage to Paige Price in July. He described the period as one of forced introspection and acknowledged that he had reached what he called ‘rock bottom.’

In the caption accompanying a photo of himself, Muniz said the difficult period had provided an unexpected opportunity for self-examination. ‘The unexpected gift in the middle of it is that I’ve had nowhere to hide. I’ve had time to sit with myself, do real self-reflection, and finally see the areas of my life that need work if I want to become a better version of me,’ he wrote. ‘Not the polished version I show the world…the actual one.’

Muniz referenced the concept of hitting rock bottom as a catalyst for change. ‘I read that sometimes hitting rock bottom is the thing that wakes you up. It forces the changes you needed to make all along so you can live the best life possible. That idea has been sitting with me,’ he wrote.

He added that he expects to look back on the current period with gratitude. ‘In five years I believe I’ll look back at this exact low point and feel grateful for it, because the high I’ll be standing on then only exists because I went through this.’

Muniz closed the post with a message directed at others who may be struggling. ‘This isn’t the end of the story. It’s the part where I start doing the work…the uncomfortable, unglamorous, necessary work. I’m choosing to treat this season as the foundation, not the finish line,’ he wrote. ‘If you’re in a low place right now too, you’re not broken. You’re being rebuilt. Let’s keep going!’

The Instagram post follows a series of shorter messages Muniz shared on X over recent weeks. On September 1, he posted the single word ‘struggling.’ Days later, he shared a quote from the 2019 film Jojo Rabbit: ‘Let everything happen to you. Beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final.’ He also posted childhood photos of himself with the caption ‘Sometimes I wish I could go back to this.’

In late August, Muniz wrote on X about the physical toll of emotional pain. ‘Am I naive to say that I didn’t know that having a broken heart actually meant your heart physically aches,’ he wrote. ‘I’d rather have a broken back than a broken heart.’

Divorce from Paige Price

The personal difficulties Muniz described follow his announcement in July that he and Paige Price were ending their marriage after ten years together. In a social media statement, Muniz said the couple had separated privately before deciding to move forward with divorce.

‘After 10 beautiful years together, we’ve grown in ways that made us realize our relationship feels most natural and strong as a deep friendship and as co-parents,’ the statement read. ‘We share an incredible son who remains the center of our world, and we’re both happier, stronger parents because of the love and growth we’ve shared.’

Muniz and Price share a five-year-old son named Mauz. The couple said they would continue to co-parent their son and maintain their business partnership through Muniz Racing.

The initial divorce announcement included a video of Muniz and Price dancing together in their home. The post drew criticism from some fans who labeled it ’embarrassing’ and ‘out of touch.’ Muniz removed the video and later deleted a revised text-only version of the announcement as well. Price publicly defended Muniz against the backlash, commenting on his post, ‘Frankie, I am so sorry that you felt the need to delete an old fun video of our family because people are so cruel to you.’

Racing Career and Malcolm in the Middle Return

Amid his personal challenges, Muniz has continued competing in the 2026 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and the Pirelli GT4 America championship. In late August, he earned his first major professional racing victory in the GT4 America series at Road America, driving a Ford Mustang GT4.

Muniz also reprised his role as Malcolm in the Disney+ and Hulu revival series Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, which premiered on April 10, 2026. The four-episode revival reunited Muniz with original cast members Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, Christopher Kennedy Masterson, and Justin Berfield. The series drew 8.1 million views in its first three days of release.

In April, Muniz crashed his NASCAR truck during a Craftsman Truck Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway on the same weekend the revival premiered. He was uninjured in the incident.

Representatives for Muniz have not issued any additional statements beyond his social media posts. The actor has not specified what other personal matters beyond his divorce may be contributing to his current struggles. His next scheduled NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race is at Kansas Speedway on September 26, 2026.
