John Wick Spinoff Caine Wraps Filming as Bill Nighy Joins Cast and Alan Ritchson Comparisons Persist

Lionsgate’s John Wick spinoff centered on the blind assassin Caine has officially wrapped production, with Donnie Yen directing and starring. The film, which began shooting in April 2026, completed principal photography in mid-July, according to a post from Yen on Instagram.

Yen shared a photo of the film’s clapperboard on July 16 with the caption, ‘That’s a wrap!’ The post confirmed that the project remains on track for a release in 2027, though Lionsgate has not yet announced a specific date.

Bill Nighy and Mason Thames Join the Cast

British actor Bill Nighy has signed on for an undisclosed role in Caine, according to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter published on Sept. 10, 2026. Nighy joins a growing ensemble that already includes Yen, Rina Sawayama, Dacre Montgomery and Mason Thames.

Sawayama will reprise her role as Akira from John Wick: Chapter 4. Montgomery, best known for Stranger Things, and Thames, who recently completed work on the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2, have both been cast in undisclosed roles.

The screenplay was written by Mattson Tomlin, who is also writing The Batman Part II, and Michael McGrale. Keanu Reeves serves as a producer alongside Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee and Chad Stahelski.

Story Continues After John Wick: Chapter 4

Lionsgate has confirmed that the film will continue Yen’s story arc following the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, in which Caine was freed from his obligations to the High Table. The studio has not released a full logline or plot details beyond that description.

Yen is also serving as an executive producer on the project. Lionsgate has described the film as being shaped by Yen’s signature approach to action filmmaking, blending precision choreography with emotional storytelling.

Production took place in Hong Kong and Macau. Yen previously directed and starred in several Hong Kong action films, including Flash Point and Paradox.

Release Window Points to 2027

With filming now complete, Caine is expected to reach theaters in 2027. Lionsgate has not confirmed a release date, but Collider reported in July 2026 that the wrap sets the film up for release before the end of 2027.

The spinoff was first announced at CinemaCon in 2025. It follows the release of Ballerina in 2025, which starred Ana de Armas and featured a cameo from Reeves. An untitled animated prequel film and John Wick: Chapter 5 are also in development at Lionsgate.

Alan Ritchson’s John Wick Connections Remain Separate

Confusion about Alan Ritchson’s involvement in the John Wick franchise has circulated online, but the Reacher star is not part of the Caine spinoff. Ritchson’s upcoming film Motor City has been widely described by critics and outlets as a blend of John Wick and Reacher, but it is an original project unrelated to the John Wick franchise.

Motor City, directed by Potsy Ponciroli, was released in U.S. theaters on July 24, 2026. Ritchson plays John Miller, a wrongfully convicted Detroit mechanic who embarks on a brutal quest for vengeance. The film also stars Shailene Woodley, Ben Foster, Pablo Schreiber and Ben McKenzie.

Ritchson is also attached to star in Painter, an action thriller written by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad. That project, announced in 2024, is still in development and does not yet have a release date.

Reacher season 4 concluded on Sept. 16, 2026, with a finale that several critics described as featuring a John Wick-style 15-minute action sequence. The Neagley spinoff series also premiered on Prime Video the same day.
