Lioness Season 3 Finale Ends With Major Cliffhangers as Season 4 Renewal Remains Unconfirmed

The third season of Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ spy thriller Lioness concluded on September 20, 2026, with a finale that delivered two major cliffhangers and left the show’s future officially unresolved. Paramount+ has not yet announced a fourth season, though several developments behind the scenes suggest the story may continue.

The finale, titled ‘The Unravelling,’ revealed that Aaliyah Amrohi (Stephanie Nur), a character from Season 1, was the mastermind behind the attempts to abduct Joe McNamara (Zoe Saldaña). Aaliyah is seeking revenge for the death of her father, who was killed by Joe’s team in Season 1. In the final scene, Aaliyah orders another attempt to capture Joe, saying, ‘Try again. Maybe third time’s the charm.’

Joe also faced a devastating personal blow. After being rescued, she returned home to find a ‘For Sale’ sign, an empty house, and a letter from her husband Neal (Dave Annable), who had taken their children and left. The finale left Joe’s marriage in ruins and set up a clear narrative path for a potential fourth season.

Despite strong viewership, Paramount+ has not officially renewed Lioness for Season 4. The season 3 premiere drew 7.1 million viewers in its first week, outperforming the Season 2 debut. The show holds an 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has remained the No. 1 TV show on Paramount+ for 196 consecutive days domestically, according to FlixPatrol data from September 23, 2026.

Series star and executive producer Zoe Saldaña has expressed uncertainty about the show’s future. In an interview with PEOPLE, she said, ‘I don’t know if we’re able to go to a season 4. I don’t know where he would take it.’ Saldaña also confirmed she has no plans to join another Taylor Sheridan series, saying, ‘I think that Joe McNamara and Lioness is all that I can handle at this time.’

Other cast members have been more optimistic. Jill Wagner, who plays Bobby and serves as a producer, told ScreenRant, ‘We’re going to get a Season 4. We will, we will. When people see what Taylor Sheridan wrote for the finale, we are getting a Season 4, or I will pay you $100.’ Nicole Kidman has also encouraged fans to voice their support, telling Entertainment Weekly, ‘We need to have loud voices — demand it!’

Behind the scenes, writer Michael Idov announced on Instagram on August 21, 2026, that he and his wife Lily Idov had joined Lioness as writers and supervising producers. Idov wrote, ‘Lily and I have joined LIONESS, Taylor Sheridan’s global smash hit, as writers and supervising producers. An honor, chance, and challenge of a lifetime to write for the likes of Zoe Saldaña, Nicole Kidman, and Morgan Freeman.’ The timing of the announcement has fueled speculation that a fourth season is in development.

If Paramount+ follows its previous pattern, a renewal decision could take months. Season 2 was renewed approximately eight months after the Season 1 finale, and Season 3 was renewed about ten months after Season 2 concluded. Based on the franchise’s typical 12-month production cycle, a fourth season could arrive by fall 2027 if a renewal is announced later this year.

Stephanie Nur, whose character Aaliyah is positioned as the central antagonist for a potential Season 4, told Entertainment Weekly she would be eager to return. ‘Selfishly, I care about her,’ Nur said. ‘So I want her to have the best outcome that she can have, and I’m sure Taylor will write that, whatever it is.’
